Tour 7

Southern Namibia to Western South Africa Tour

This tour is the product of the demand of visitors to experience both countries, Namibia and South Africa. This tour would not be offered without the constant growth of interest of visitors in BirdsConTour, because though we are birdwatching, we do not neglect the myriad other attractions offer when touring or being on an outing. The driest part of a dry land, Southern Namibia lies between Windhoek and the Orange River, bounded in the west by the dune sea of the Namib Desert and in the east by the fiery red sands of the Kalahari. While traversing the southern Namibian region's seemingly never-ending gravel plains, the traveler could be forgiven for thinking them lifeless. But still visitors will be rewarded with a number of desert adapted animals and birds that thrive in these waterless conditions. Access to Western South Africa will be at Noordoewer on the Orange River, the border. The western half of South Africa is a unique African destination. Dramatic mountain ranges, epicenter of the unique Cape Floral Kingdom, contrast with the vast semi-desert plains of the Karoo. Also a country of fertile valleys watered by many rivers and studded with pastures and vineyards. The coast is characterized by rocky promontories and sheltered bays. The Cape has a Mediterranean-type climate, with cold, wet winters and dry summers.

Tour 10

Special Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is internationally famous for its wildlife and landscapes. For a young country, Namibia is seen as a leader in its field of conservation. For example, the black rhinoceros population, virtually extinct in the park at the time of proclamation in 1907, grew substantially but suffered heavy losses to poachers in 1989. Thanks to a multi-pronged approach to conserving these animals and working with neighbouring communities, Etosha now holds by far the most important population in the world. While the last elephant herd was shot at Namutoni in 1881, the gradual recolonisation of the park from neighbouring land started half a century later. There are now 2500 elephants in Etosha.

Overall Namibia

Namibia is a country of vast open spaces and relatively few people. Situated along the southwestern coast of the African continent, Namibia is truly a land of remarkable contrasts with a land surface of 824360 square kilometers. The small population is largerly due to the fact that Namibia is the most arid country south of the Sahara. Average annual rainfall varies from a 10mm along the coast to 700mm in the northeast. Namibia is a country of clear blue skies and plesant climate. The summer months are hot and temperatures of 35 degree Celsius, or higher, are common in the south and in the north of the country. Winter days are pleasent, but minimum temperatures can drop to below freezing in mid-winter. Fog is a common occurrence along the coast but usually lifts around mid-morning and settles in again in the afternoons. The economy centers around agriculture ( mainly stock farming ), fishing and mining while tourism is a major economic activity.

Tour 18

Namibia via Caprivi to Botswana Vic Falls

The Caprivi Strip has far more in common with the well-watered areas to the north than it does with the remainder of Namibia. Much of the region is flat, essentially featureless and blanketed in broad-leaves woodland, but it has been blessed with a number of tropical rivers, most famous of which are the Okavango and the Zambezi. Shortly after traversing the Caprivi strip, the Okavango River meanders into Botswana through the Okavango Delta's upper reaches, commonly known as the Okavango Panhandle. Dominated by the dry woodlands of the Kalahari Desert, Botswana boasts a popular combination of wonderful wilderness landscapes, abundant wildlife, and good infastructure. For many visitors, the enormity and solitude of Botswana's arid interior leave as great an impression as the bird-filled, game-studded swamps of the Okavango Delta.
