Destination Madagascar & the Comoros
Madagascar has one of the most dramatic records of species extinction in modern times, resulting from the impact of hunting since the arrival of humans 2300 years ago. In the Comoros, at least 80 % of the native vegetation has been destroyed. The threats to Madagascar in the South West Indian Ocean islands are well documented and eco tourism is playing a substantial role in economic development in these regions and contributes to the management of important biodiversity sites. With the ' Destination Madagascar & Comoros ' tour BirdsConTour will advance the cause biodirversity conservation and promote the region as a top destination for nature - based tourism.

Destination Madagascar & the Comoros
Altough located about 4oo km off the east coast of Africa, Madagascar has been isolated from the African landmass some 165 million years ago. As a result Madagascar started producing a remarkable variety of animals and plants unknown anywhere else on earth. Visitors often describe Madagascar as 'a naturalist's promised land.'
The Comoros Islands were called the Comoros Djazair al Qamar by early seafaring Arabs, meaning ' Island of the Moon' , which caused the name Comoros in English. In moonlit nights one easily understands the origin for the name- the moon shines brilliantly behind the palm trees, silvering old Swahili palaces and reflecting on white sand beaches.
